Gold Medal Challenge, Part 1
It's time for the Gold Medal Challenge. I wasn't really worried about the 1/2. I finished in 2:46:59. Barb and I ran together...all 47.5 laps. Running in circles wasn't so bad. We kept seeing the same people over and over. We started a lovely game of tag with some other Gold Medal Challenge people. Barb's mom came out to cheer us on (very cool!) It was just a lot of fun! We saw speed skaters practicing and open skate. I actually enjoyed myself! Too bad they ran out of medals. I was promised one in the mail. (I'll keep you updated on when that shows up.) I am nervous about tomorrow...
Does this rank on my top 10 list of stupid things?

Chicago Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon!!

I know this race will always have a special place in my heart. It's the former Chicago Distance Classic, and also my first major distance race. Today was a perfect day for a run and a PR of 2:25:33

May 17, 2009

This half sucked. I was tired for the first 1/2. Then after mile 9 I puked up the gu (then Gatorade at 10.3)...ugh. I finished in 2:45:54. Worst pacer ever. I felt so bad I had to stop. I really sucked it up. It's a good thing they can't fire a volunteer.

I also was running early on, and this woman came up to me and complained about the size of my group. I said I'm sorry, this is a race and it's not my job to tell people where to run. Sure, Saturday mornings I have the authority to ask people to run 2 by 2, but not during a race. It's there race and if she has an issue, she should talk to the course marshals. Clearly, someone's going to get a phone call about the rude pacer.

I need something to get my rear back in shape. I don't know if it's rest, a pep talk, more sleep, less stress (ok, less stress would be great regardless of my running). I just don't know what to do with myself. I guess I'm hitting a training wall.

Ah the OUC Half Marathon!

I traveled to Orlando to run the half with Amy--she's the one in the middle and it was her first 1/2 Marathon!
I'm very proud to say that she finished in just over 2 hours, and her friend Robin finished in about 2:15!

I did an unimpressive 2:39, but at least I finished. I ran the first 1/2 and walk ran the second. I still am not feeling 100%. I figured that if you have to be not feeling well, it's better to be in a place where it's 75 and sunny!

Coast to Coast Challenge: Complete!

Today was the Disneyland 1/2 Marathon! It actually was cool and over cast for the run...very nice running weather. We dressed as Minnie Mouse (so fun!) There was a lot of running on the streets of Anaheim. We ran around and through the parks, over to the Honda Center (home of the Ducks) and Angel Stadium then back to finish in Downtown Disney.

Unfortunately, my feet were killing me. My shoes were at about 275 miles, and I thought I could make them last...not so much. They also gave me awful blisters. The balls of my feet under the callouses and on my toes... the ones on my toes actually ripped open. I also have killer shin splints. Needless to say, my shoes are dead, I left them in California--I never wanted to see them again!

Barb and I also took pictures with the characters as we ran...(as soon as she sends them to me, I'll post them) and finished in 2:39:56 which works out to a 12:13 average mile pace. And at the finish, we got the HUGE castle medals and the Coast to Coast Challenge medal--Yeah Disney!!

My second running of the Chicago Distance Classic! I've come so far :)

First of all, I have to say, I'm so proud of Julia. It was her first 1/2 Marathon--She rocked it!! Her time was amazing! I'm convinced that her running helped me to do so well! Here we are after the race with our medals:
(Yes, my shirt says "Cheetah in Training") Today, I got a PR--by 9 minutes!!! My time was 2:29:56, which was a pace of 11:27 per mile. I'm sure it helped that it was a perfect day!! Look at that sky! (Daniel, Danielle, Julia, myself, Chris and John)That pace even beats my 8k and 10k PR paces. And if we look at this years race to last year's race (even if the course was different--and a .4 GPS discrepency) you'll see a 2o minute improvement! Heck, from race to race I have a total of 12 medals between the two races (14 if you count the two CDC medals). While a year ago, I wanted to do this race again, I never thought I'd have run a marathon, be pacing for a 20 miler and have done triathlons.

Here are some members of my running group, Daniel, Danielle, John, Julie, Chris and Gabe:
I did have one issue, in a frenzy of getting ready, I forgot my underwear. I guess going commando helped, because I had an awesome race and a PR!!

1/2 MARATHON DAY!!!

So, getting up at 3:00 am was not fun. I'm not a fan of waiting at the start for two hours so that all the roads can be closed down. But it was still an awesome race. I, of course, felt the need to run the race wearing Tinkerbell wings and glitter (but does that really surprise anyone?!?!)

Fireworks started the race and my first 5k just flew by. Let me tell you, running through the Magic Kingdom with all the spectators cheering was truly and awesome experience. The back roads of Disney were filled with cast members and characters cheering on the runners. Bands, music and even a gospel choir were there for motivation. My asthma acted up around mile 10, but I walked a little and was able to finish strong.

I completely shattered my time from the last 1/2 marathon. I beat my last half marathon time by 11:57--that's almost a TWELVE MINUTE PR!!! That's HUGE!!

Here's the break down from the race:

Bib Number #31889
Official Time 2:39:02
Clock Time 3:04:12
Chip Time 2:39:02
Overall Place 6547
Gender Place 3208
Division Place 451
Age Grade 41.4%
5K Split 33:28
10K Split 1:09:00
15K Split 1:50:01

I love having the splits, it shows that I really need to work on my endurance, because as the distance gets longer, I get slower. I guess that's normal at this stage. None the less, I'm still pretty freakin' proud of myself!!

I did it!!! First ½ Marathon!! (insert happy dance here Woo-Hoo!!)

This morning was the Chicago Distance Classic and while there’s a strong possibility it’s due to a runner’s high, I never thought I’d run 13.1 miles and have this big of a smile on my face!! (Still doing the happy dance)

It wasn’t all smooth sailing; I did hit a few speed bumps. The first slight problem was around mile six…my iPod ran out of juice. After I quit swearing, I started singing to myself in my head. (Did you know “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and the “Alphabet Song” have the same tune? My profound discovery around mile 7). The second came between miles nine and ten...my lungs decided that they had had enough. If I didn’t slow down to walk they were going to revolt with an asthma attack. While my legs wanted to keep going, I decided that a nice little walk break was in order. The last problem didn’t present itself until much later in the day…the sun wasn’t up at 4:30 when I woke up, but sunblock would have been a really smart choice (not that my sports bra burn line isn’t sexy). Two out of three of those bumps are fixable… Memo to me: 1) Charge iPod, 2) Slather on the SPF.

I finished the race in 2:50:59. I really did want it to be under 2:45…but my lungs didn’t agree. All well, there’s always next time!! On yet another side tangent, I realized today that I’ve run 101K in races this year. That’s 62.62 miles! I haven’t decided if I want to add up all my training runs with that too…

It was a great race! Thank you to everyone who sent their advice and well wishes for this race…as well as telling me that I’d do all right (Chris) and not die (Barb) or even that I’m crazy (Mom). I’m a little sad I have to wait until January before I run one again. But until then I have a big honkin’ penguin medal, a little bit of bragging rights, and an excuse to keep doing the happy dance!
