Today was awesome. I've decided that the dophin swim is much easier with flippers...and more fun. I swam for 50 minutes and did 600 yards.

Emily taught me how to dive...I love it! I didn't even belly flop. I'm a rockstar!! I even got my Level 1 card...woo-hoo!!

Now I just have to figure out the training for the tri so that I can incorporate the distances and training for biking and swimming in with my running routine.

48 Flights with Girls on the Run...Every time we ran up the stairs at school it was a different emotion. Took about 20 minutes, due to having to walk back down the stairs and give the girls a little rest in between.

April 28, 2008

3 miles today, 12 minute pace... nice and easy. God bless the taper.

Ravenswood 5k--

I KICKED IT'S ASS!! PR!!! WOO-HOO! I rocked it today! I didn't even feel like I went balls out...so awesome! I felt really good while running! I had a total time of 31:15 for a 10:04 minute mile.

I saw some neighbors working the first aid tent...that was cool. I also had breakfast with Molly and her mom (@ Paulina's again!). It was a great day!!

I went with Tina and Pete to the Arlington Heights bike swap and I got a new bike today! It's a Trek road bike...Granted I don't know much about bikes, but it's light and has a lot of carbon fiber. Pete checked it out and said I'd be happy riding it. I worked on cleaning it...and then took it for a quick 2 mile spin. (Jack actually ended up doing the better cleaning job, but at least I tried!!)

It's so pretty. I think I need to name it...maybe I'll name it after Pete...I think the name is TBA for now. I need to get a feel for it so the name fits it.

50:00 minutes at the pool and 800 yards. Emily tried to teach me the dolphin swim. Yeah, I couldn't decided if I looked like I was having a seizure in the water or like the worm in the bottle of the tequila bottle. (I think I'd be liking the swim more, if the pool was tequila.)

Anyway, this guy was asking me about my stroke, and why I breathe like I do. Apparently, I'm not breathing correctly and that's why swimming is so hard for me. I must pursure this whole breathing thing a little more. Especially since I have not yet figured out how to grow gills.

I biked to the gym today, 6 miles total (3 miles there, then after the work out 3 miles back). It only took about 20 minutes each way. I wasn't really pushing myself, and I enjoyed the ride! Thank goodness for being able to borrow a bike. I think after the marathon, I need to ride to the gym more often!

I'm running out of training runs.... I did one mile in 11:30 before Hector gave me an easy day...streatching and legs and core. I feel fat today. :(

Saturday

April 19, 2008

8 miles at an 11:32 pace for a total of 1:32:10.

It was our last training run! Everyone else's marathon is next weekend...I can't believe the end is here!!

Elaine, Jen and I headed to breakfast...I can't wait to hear their stories after they finish!

Wednesday

April 16, 2008

I had to cancel with Hector today due to a wake. I did, however, make it to swimming. It was an ok swim. I like getting the laps in...but I felt like a lard ass. I've felt like this all week. It was freestyle for 45:00 and a total of 600 yards.

On another note, I tried to learn the flippy thing with the wall. Yeah, I looked like a dolphin in a tuna net. The only thing I was successful with was getting a TON of water up my nose.

Can someone tell me why I thought a tri was a good idea?

Tuesday

April 15, 2008

I ran with the Girls for GOTR today. It was so long. The girls are so whiney and don't want to try to learn to pace themselves. At least I had an easy day to get in the milage. It was 3 of the longest miles of my life!! I guess I shouldn't say that...everyone has to start somewhere. I think that if I felt that they were positive and trying, instead of crying about it, I would be more tolerant.

Monday

April 14, 2008

I think Bethie's old body is getting tired. I just couldn't get below a 12 today. I did 6 miles on the elliptical in 1:12:00.

Hector and I did core work. I just felt like ass. Ugh, I don't know what the hell's the matter with me. I just sucked. I guess everyone has those days, at least I tried. :(

Saturday

April 12, 2008

Elaine and I ran together for our 12 mile long run. Jen met us for the first half, but she had a Sox game to go to, so she technically finished with us. The weather was crappy compared to last week, but the run was much easier! We were out for 2:15 at an 11:15 pace.

Not to shabby for the slow girl! I know my group keeps telling me that I'm a strong runner, but I think that I have to get to the place where I feel it and believe it to be true.

After the run, Elaine and I went to Paulina's for breakfast...so yummy! And the hot chocolate hit the spot! I swear I was chilled to the bone...which is odd, I'd been training all winter!

Wednesday

April 9, 2008

First arms and core with Hector, then 5 mile run on the elliptical, 12:20 pace for a total time of 1:01:37.

I swam for 50 minutes this evening. Emily tried to teach me the sidestroke today. I don't have it yet, but in theory it's pretty easy. Good to know for if freestyle tires me out in the Tri. I was also working in the deep end. I was trying to not use the sides to get closer to the open water feel. I know it's not the same, but it's better than where I can touch!

Monday

April 7, 2008

Today I did a 12:30 pace on the elliptical for 8 miles--Total time, an 1:40.

I also got a good streatch from Hector and thankfully he did my arms instead of legs.

I was tired, crabby and sore, but I did it anyway. BLAH

Saturday

April 5, 2008

Hey, Bethie! What did you do this weekend?

I ran 20 miles.

Being able to say that is the highlight of my day. The run itself...questionable. First of all there was a 50k going on...now those people are AWESOME. Seriously, they'd kick my ass any day of the week.

Becky and I ran a 11:30/12:00 pace for most of it. About mile 16 I got a killer cramp in my calf. It was weird, because it was the inner part of the calf. I've never had that hurt before. You know that feeling when an alien is about to pop out of your stomach? Well, that's how my calf felt. I tried to walk it out. I told myself, "You're not allowed to cry on the running path".

I nearly did cry when I got to North Ave and there was no Gatorade and I was out of water. I had my own personal cloud burst in one of the bathroom stalls (not on the running path). After washing my face I took my sad self back to the path.

Just after the bridge I tripped on a stick that cut my heel open. (And now I officially hate sticks.) Right on that part where you can see your Achilles sticking out...Bloody and without balance, I rolled on to the grass. I figured it was better that falling on the gravel or becoming roadkill on the actual path; No thanks to the cyclists that were laughing at me (assholes). That's when this little old man trotted over and helped me up. He said "Keep going, you're doing great, Honey!" and then ran off like a the Energizer Bunny on speed. He had to be at least 80. And if that wasn't demoralizing enough, he was racing in the Ultra-marathon! (If he hadn't just helped me, I'd seriously hate him!)

I continued on, much slower, vowing not to cry. I kept telling myself "Someday you won't able to do this anymore. Today is not that day." I'm not sure how many times I said "Today is not that day." but it worked. I made it back to the parking lot. Elayne was waiting for me. It was so nice to have someone to stretch with. She kept telling me how strong I was. I was the last runner to finish. In tears, no less, but I appreciate her lying to me.

I was just happy to be finished. I think wiping out on the running path was the lowest point of my running career. I also discovered that after 20 miles, things that I never thought could chafe can and will. Seriously, I've had the sports bra chafe, blisters and chub rub. I've even had chafing from underwear elastic (that's an adventure in itself). Never before has my ass crack chafed. Seriously! WTF? I never would have thought to even worry about chafage let alone apply Body Glide there!

But I guess if being tired, having a little chafeage, some sunburn and sore calfs is the worst I can say, then I didn't do too bad. Total running time was a little over 5 hours with water breaks/gu stops/stretching.

Go, Bethie-GO!

Kickin' my own ass...

I ran 2 miles before Hector on the elliptical. Then Hector took mercy on my legs due to my running of 40 miles in 5 days, and the impending 20 miler on Saturday and we did core work. I do enjoy core days...because they're good for me.

He also had me balancing on a medicine ball and then squatting. That's right--Squats on a ball. I know he was spotting me, but I was awesome. Who knew, that I of all people would have the core strength and balance to do that! Woo-Hoo!

I finished my run after Hector. 3 more miles for a total of 5 miles. Then I went to swimming. Emily wasn't there, but Chad and one other lifeguard was. I tried to do laps. Damn, I was tired. I did 16 laps. Freestyle to the deep end and back stroke to the shallow. I asked what the length of the pool was and Chad said it was 25 yards, so 50 yards total. 50 x 16 is 800 yards. I ran it through the mileage converter on my Runner's World log...that's a 1/2 mile swim!! Sure, it wasn't 16 laps in a row. I had some rests, but I'm happy I could do that much in the 50 minutes I was there. I'm less worried about a triathlon now. Not that I don't need to train, rather that a triathlon really is an achievable goal. Now I just need to get faster and have better endurance. I imagine it's hard to 'rest' in open water.

Tuesday

Today I ran 26.2 miles...just to see what it was like. So easy. Seriously, the marathon will be a piece of cake!

APRIL FOOL!

Riiight. I ran the 5 miles I was supposed to. End of story.
(How crazy do you think I am?!?!)
